It’s so important to have multiple outlets for our mental health. Whether we are going through a hard time or not. We should be keep topping ourselves up by releasing tension whenever possible. Look at it this way ... I’ve already started topping up on echinacea and it"s only August. Why? I want to boost my immune system. I don’t want to wait until I’m sick to prevent it. Even if I can’t prevent a virus or bug, what I can do is ensure I’m in the best possible health to combat it. The same goes for our mental health. Our personal and work lives can attribute to stress which is why a daily and weekly outlet is necessary. A regular outlet!
In my recent vlog talking about Kanye West and the example he is setting to voice and vocalise our feelings, I explain how necessary it is for us to find expression through any medium to release a whole range of emotions. We shouldn't just see a release as being about stress. We should see it as being a way for us to check-in with ourselves. Whatever we feel. (I am not for a moment saying that Kanye is a spokesperson for mental health - it's more about the example he is inadvertently setting).
For me, writing (blogging or poetry ... sometimes the creative writing I am developing), listening to music, painting or taking a really long walk does the trick. But the secret is to keep it regular. I can immediately feel my entire being stiffen when I am just going going going and not expressing. When you live alone (as I do with my daughter) and you're the only adult around, you really have to rely on yourself which can make things more pronounced. I sense myself getting really TIGHT with my breath if I haven't spoken/vented/or expressed any anxieties. It's a gift though as it can nudge you into exploring multiple ways of expression. Without anyone around, brain dumping it on paper, or even getting out of your mind and into your body by doing a PHYSICAL activity (could even be gardening or a domestic spring clean) will transport you into an altered state.
All challenges come with opportunities. Do you agree? Send me your thoughts and comments below. Much love. Serena.
